Asking "how much does a rack cost?" is like asking "how much does a car cost?": it depends. Here are ballpark figures to frame the question, the factors that really move the bill, and above all the hidden costs that turn an attractive offer into a nasty surprise.

What "rack price" really means #

Renting a rack is not renting an empty cabinet. You pay for a bundle: space (a full rack or a fraction), energy (the allocated power, in kilowatts), cooling, connectivity to carriers, and services such as security or hands-on interventions. Space is often just the visible part; energy frequently weighs the most.

Ranges to frame your thinking #

In France, in 2026, a quarter rack runs around 400 to 450 € per month, a half rack around 500 to 600 €, a full rack most often between 550 and 1,400 € depending on allocated power (3 to 10 kW), and a high-density rack (10 kW and up, typical of GPU clusters) easily exceeds 3,000 €. These are markers, not quotes: real prices depend on the site and move fast.

The five factors that set the price #

Power per rack is the number-one lever, and the price does not rise linearly. Then come the resilience level (the Tier classification, N+1 or 2N), location (major hubs like Paris, Frankfurt or Amsterdam cost more than a regional site), volume and commitment term (which unlock discounts), and connectivity (a carrier-rich site saves you on networking).

The hidden costs that sink a good deal #

The rack price is only a starting point. Watch the setup fees (sometimes several months of rent), the way energy is billed (flat rate or actual consumption, with the PUE measuring what cooling consumes), the price of cross-connects (billed monthly, per link), remote hands (on-demand technical interventions) and exit terms (notice period, decommissioning fees).

On-premise: costs you don't see either #

Building your own server room at the office feels like control, but the costs surface fast: the electricity of compute and cooling running non-stop, industrial cooling that office air-conditioning cannot replace, network redundancy (two or three carriers with no real diversity), staff time and the office space tied up. A data center pools all of this, with far cheaper energy, which few companies can reproduce alone.

Why prices are rising, and the counter #

Since late 2025, the surge in memory prices, drained toward artificial intelligence, has pushed server costs up, and the increases hit even machines already in production. Two solid counters: owning your hardware (refurbished gear locks in costs already paid at yesterday's prices) rather than renting it, and placing it in a nearby data center, for fast intervention and a sovereignty argument you can verify by walking through the door.

The method: compare on 3-year total cost #

Ask every operator exactly the same questions: all-in price for your configuration, how energy is billed and the PUE, setup fees, the price of a cross-connect and which carriers are present, remote-hands rates, redundancy level and SLA, growth capacity, and exit terms. Then reason in total cost of ownership over three years, not the headline monthly rent: an offer 15% dearer on paper can be the cheapest overall.

The real work is not finding the lowest price, but making comparable a set of offers that never present their prices the same way.
