Once your servers are racked, they still need to reach the world: carriers, internet exchanges, your other sites. In a data center this physical link has a name, the cross-connect, and it weighs on the bill as much as on performance.
A cross-connect is a physical cable, copper or fibre, that links your rack to another party present in the data center: a carrier, an internet exchange, another customer. It runs through the interconnection room, the Meet-Me Room, where the links concentrate. It is the basic building block of all colocation connectivity.
The Meet-Me Room (MMR) is the neutral room where all present carriers come to connect. Being well connected there means reaching many networks easily. A data center rich in carriers in its MMR offers more choice and better transit prices.
A cross-connect is usually billed at install, then monthly, per link. This recurring cost, often underestimated, adds up fast: multiplying links, for several carriers or for redundancy, multiplies the bill. Worth comparing between data centers, as pricing varies widely.
On the internal cabling side, two schools. Direct interconnection links the equipment to the distribution panel in a single patch: simple, cheap, low loss. The cross-connect in the cabling sense adds a dedicated patch panel that mirrors the ports: more hardware and space, but an isolated patching zone that protects critical equipment and simplifies changes.
With a dedicated patching zone, you never touch the active equipment ports again: adds and moves happen on the jumpers, between panels. The result is fewer mistakes and faster incident recovery. That is why critical environments prefer it, despite the extra cost.
Before choosing a data center, look at who is present in its Meet-Me Room, the price and lead time of a cross-connect, and the possible redundancy, with two links over two paths. A site poor in carriers locks you in, a rich one gives you choice. An interconnection comparator makes this visible before you sign.
