Data center cabling: fibre types, connectors and cross-connects

Cabling is the plumbing of the data center: invisible when done well, a source of outages when botched. Three choices shape everything: the fibre type, the connector, and how you link your rack to the rest of the site.

Multimode or single-mode? #

For linking nearby racks in the same room, multimode fibre (OM3 to OM5) remains the most economical choice. Single-mode fibre (OS2) takes over to interconnect distant rooms or sites, thanks to its near-unlimited reach. Decide by the distance to cover and the target bandwidth.

LC or MPO/MTP #

The two-strand LC connector equips most links from 1 to 25 Gbit/s. Beyond that, from 40 to 100 Gbit/s and up, the MPO/MTP format bundles several fibres into a single ferrule to carry the throughput. Deploying both technologies without a clear architecture plan quickly leads to cabling errors.

Patch cord, cross-connect, Meet-Me Room #

Simple patch cords handle links inside your rack. Reaching a carrier or a third party, however, requires a cross-connect run to the data center's Meet-Me Room. Build this physical cabling into your budget: it is a recurring cost in colocation.

Get it right from the start #

Strand labelling, correct lengths, bend radius respected, up-to-date documentation. Clean cabling is paid for once; botched cabling is paid for at every intervention.

FAQ #

Fibre or copper in a data center?

Copper (DAC, RJ45) still fits very short distances and management links. Beyond a few metres and for high speeds, fibre wins.

What is a cross-connect?

A physical link run in the data center between your rack and another point (carrier, customer), via the Meet-Me Room. It is billed, often at install then recurring.
