What is it?

WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) and its dense variant DWDM carry several wavelengths (colors) over a single fiber pair. Each channel carries 10G, 100G or more, multiplying the capacity of an existing link.

WDM or DWDM: what's the difference?

DWDM (dense) packs channels tightly to fit far more on one fiber (long-distance, high capacity); CWDM, more spaced, is simpler and cheaper over short distances.

Do I need dark fiber for DWDM?

Usually yes: DWDM runs on a fiber you light (dark fiber), or is bought as a 'wavelength' (lambda) service delivered by a carrier.

What capacity can be reached?

From dozens to over a hundred channels depending on the system, each at 100G or beyond. Sizing depends on distance and target bandwidth.
