Which copper cable category should you choose (Cat 6, 6A, 7, 8)?

Direct answer

Cat 6A is the data center standard: 10 Gb/s over 100 m. Cat 6 is enough at 1 Gb/s. Cat 8 (25/40 Gb/s) is limited to short top-of-rack links; beyond that, fiber takes over.

Pick by speed AND distance:

Shielding matters as much as the category: U/UTP (unshielded) in clean environments, F/UTP or S/FTP where there is interference. Field rule: Cat 6A copper for anything ≤10 Gb/s over 100 m; beyond that (25/40/100 Gb/s or long distances) switch to fiber.
