The story in short
Started in 1998 by Al Avery and Jay Adelson, two Digital Equipment alumni, Equinix was built on a simple idea: neutral ground where competing carriers agree to interconnect. The company survived the dot-com crash, listed on Nasdaq, and converted into a specialised REIT in 2015. Three decades later the founding idea still drives it: the more networks in a site, the more customers that site attracts.
Footprint
Equinix operates more than 260 IBX data centers across 70+ metros on five continents. In France it runs the Paris campus (PA2 in Saint-Denis, PA5, PA10…) and Bordeaux (BX1). Its Paris sites are among the densest in Europe by networks present — much of the French peering market is decided there.
Services
Rack and cage colocation, physical interconnection (cross-connects) and virtual interconnection (Equinix Fabric, a software-defined circuit between customers in different sites), direct cloud on-ramps, and in-house Internet exchanges. Equinix rarely sells the lowest price on the market: it sells network density and the global reach of a single contract.
