Founded in 2006, Data4 made a bet then unusual in France: the large-scale data center campus, expandable building by building. Two decades later its historic Marcoussis site is one of continental Europe's largest, and the group belongs to Canada's Brookfield.
The story in short
Data4 was created in 2006 with backing from Colony Capital, around a campus in Essonne (Marcoussis, at the gates of Paris-Saclay). AXA IM took control in 2018, before the 2023 sale to Brookfield Infrastructure for about $2.4bn — the Canadian giant's first major move into European data centers. In early 2025, Brookfield and Data4 announced a massive AI-oriented investment programme in France.
Footprint
Around thirty data centers organised as campuses: France (Marcoussis and the Paris region), Italy (Milan), Spain, Poland, Luxembourg, with committed expansions in Germany and Greece. The model: control an entire site's land and power, then build at the pace of demand.
Services
High-power colocation aimed at large accounts, hosters and clouds: private rooms, dedicated buildings, high densities suited to AI racks, documented environmental commitments (life-cycle analysis, low-carbon energy). Data4 sells scale and trajectory more than single racks.
What it means for your project
For needs measured in tens or hundreds of kilowatts with a growth path, a campus like Marcoussis brings power reserves and on-site expansion. For one or two isolated racks, the campus model is not always the most direct route — an identical-basis comparison settles it.
