Cogent at a glance

Washington D.C. (États-Unis) · Société cotée (Nasdaq : CCOI)

Cogent is first one of the global Internet's great carriers: a Tier 1 network famous for aggressively priced IP transit. Since acquiring Sprint's historic wireline network, it has also been converting its technical buildings into colocation data centers.

The story in short

Founded in 1999 in Washington by Dave Schaeffer, Cogent grew by buying dot-com-era networks cheaply and became the maverick of IP transit: a simple product at one of the lowest per-megabit prices on the market. In 2023 it acquired Sprint's wireline business, inheriting telephone exchanges it is progressively converting into colocation sites and compute-ready centers.

Footprint

A network present in more than 50 countries, connected to thousands of enterprise buildings and third-party data centers — including many French sites, where Cogent ranks among the most present transit providers. To this it now adds its own centers, mainly in North America, from the Sprint estate.

Services

IP transit and dedicated bandwidth (its historic core), point-to-point Ethernet, colocation in its centers and points of presence. The promise has not moved in twenty-five years: simple, standardised connectivity at the best price — bespoke service is not Cogent's playing field.

What it means for your project

Read a Cogent rack offer as a carrier package: the value peaks if you also consume its transit. To compare honestly, price the rack AND the megabit together — which is exactly why the comparator shows all-in costs and the transit providers present at each site.
