FTTO for SMBs in France: commitment, SLA and how to choose

For its network access, a company has two choices: pro FTTH, shared and without a strong guarantee, and FTTO, a dedicated fibre with guaranteed bandwidth and a restoration commitment. Here is how to decide without overpaying.

FTTO gives you a dedicated fibre; FTTH shares the same fibre between several subscribers.

FTTO or pro FTTH: the real difference #

Pro FTTH is shared and best-effort: download faster than upload, no strong guarantee, low price. FTTO is a dedicated fibre: guaranteed symmetric bandwidth and a contractual restoration commitment. The choice turns on how critical your activity is, not on the headline speed.

The restoration SLA, what you really pay for #

The restoration SLA (in France, the GTR) is the contractual time to restore service after an outage, for example four hours. The premium on FTTO mostly pays for this guarantee. Check the covered window (business hours or 24/7) and the penalties if it is missed.

Commitment and installation #

Terms run from twelve to sixty months. Add the setup fee, and sometimes civil-works if the address is not already serviceable. In low-density areas, lead time and installation cost climb: always have eligibility checked at the exact address.

How to choose #

Start from the guaranteed symmetric bandwidth you actually need, the SLA level your downtime tolerance justifies, the contract term, and eligibility at the address. Then compare offers on an identical basis, SLA included.

FAQ #

Is FTTO much more expensive than pro FTTH?

Yes, several times the price. That gap pays for guaranteed symmetric bandwidth and a contractual SLA. It is justified by how critical your activity is, not by raw speed.

Which SLA should I pick?

A four-hour 24/7 SLA for an activity that cannot stop, a business-hours SLA for office use. Paying for a strong SLA on a non-critical use is waste.
